Development Director - Hope Reins

At Hope Reins, we pair hurting kids with rescued horses to find hope and healing. We are a faith-based organization founded on the belief that healing comes from faith in Christ. Hope Reins is a safe, loving community where families in crisis experience love, comfort and compassion in the midst of crisis.  Our vision is to inspire true hope and real healing for every child.

We serve kids ages 5 to 18 experiencing crises by providing free of charge, 90-minute sessions with a rescued horse and trained leader. Since 2010, we have conducted over 8,000 sessions and served more than 1,500 children from The Triangle and beyond with the support of 190 volunteers.

Hope Reins 2018 operating budget is $1,072,000 and growing. All revenue is raised through unrestricted contributions from individuals, foundations, partners, and special events and programs. Hope Reins has grown 180% in the last two years allowing us to serve more children due to the purchase of our new 33-acre facility.

Job Purpose

Work with the CEO, Board of Directors and other volunteers, to plan and implement a comprehensive development plan for short- and long-term revenue growth. The development plan will include strategies for resource development, including major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation and in-kind resources. Serve as an engaged member of the organization’s leadership team.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Achievement of Revenue Goals

  1. Work with CEO to develop and execute a comprehensive development plan to ensure the achievement of annual revenue goals.
  2. Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities. 
  3. Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary.
  4. Coordinate and implement the annual campaign to include:
    • Successfully manage spring “Ask” event
    • Meet monthly cultivations (POE) Story Tour targets
    • Coordinate the annual report
    • Implementation of end of year appeal
    • Support coordination of fundraising event “Hoofin’ It For Hope”
  5. Research and prepare grant applications as outlined in the development plan. 
  6. In partnership with the board and Development Committee, implement a planned giving program to generate estate gifts and other types of deferred support.
  7. Serve as the staff liaison to the Development Committee.
  8. Foster an understanding of philanthropy within organization.

Donor Cultivation

  1. Oversee implementation of “Story Tour” cultivation program including tours, volunteer management, pipeline and cultivation activities.
  2. Identify and cultivate major gifts prospects in consultation with CEO.
  3. Develop and maintain a planned giving program for major donors to help them achieve their philanthropic objectives.
  4. Work closely in consultation with the Development Committee, Director of Marketing and staff, to implement effective communications and marketing strategies.

Donor Care and Stewardship

  1. Ensure all gifts are promptly acknowledged and manage intentional donor care activities.
  2. Build and implement a comprehensive donor stewardship program.
  3. Coordinate and oversee the effective use and integrity of Bloomerang, the donor management system.

Broad knowledge and experience in:

  • Major gift and annual fundraising - strong ability and proven track record
  • Benevon sustainable fundraising model helpful
  • Experience in establishing or managing a planned giving program preferred

Excellent Skills in:

  • Written and oral communications and appropriate self-confidence and maturity to effectively communicate Hope Reins’ vision at all levels and across organizational lines to inspire staff, board, donors and volunteers
  • Organizational abilities including collaborating, planning, delegating, setting priorities, management of goals, and track details, data, information and activities
  • Technology including database, spreadsheets, presentations, and word processing

Demonstrated ability to:

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university
  • Five or more years of demonstrated fundraising success including track record of successfully executing a comprehensive development plan and face to face solicitations of $10,000+
