Controller - Accreditation Commission for Health Care
The Opportunity
Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) is dedicated to enhancing patient care and safety through a commitment to continuous improvement and accreditation excellence. As a nationally recognized healthcare accrediting organization, ACHC partners with providers across a spectrum of healthcare settings to deliver superior outcomes and quality improvement strategies.
As a fee for service not-for-profit organization with close to 300 employees, ACHC has annual revenues approaching $50 million, and manages a significant volume of transactional activity.
ACHC is hiring a Controller to join its mission-driven team, providing daily financial leadership and operational oversight to ensure the organization’s fiscal health and integrity. This role is central to supporting ACHC's commitment to excellence, accountability, and innovation in healthcare accreditation.
Responsibilities of the Role
The Controller will report directly to the VP, Finance & Corporate Services and manage applicable accounting/financial functions of ACHC, including financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls. The Controller will play a key role in executing financial strategies that align with ACHC’s goals, maintaining transparency, and fostering a culture of financial accountability.
The Controller’s key responsibilities include:
Financial Management
- Oversee and manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage and monitor cash flow to ensure liquidity and operational stability.
- Collaborate with the FP&A Manager and the VP, Finance & Corporate Services to develop and implement budgets and financial forecasts.
- Coordinate and prepare for annual audits, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and standards.
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Assist the VP, Finance & Corporate Services in developing long-term financial strategies aligned with ACHC’s strategic plan.
- Provide financial analysis to support strategic decision-making, identifying opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to company leaders and staff on financial matters, providing insights and recommendations for business improvements.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations, including tax filings and reporting requirements.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard ACHC’s assets and mitigate risk.
- Monitor and manage ACHC’s investment portfolio in collaboration with external advisors and the VP, Finance & Corporate Services.
Team Development and Collaboration
- Lead and mentor the Accounting team (currently 6 people), fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align financial operations with organizational objectives.
The Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate for the Controller role will demonstrate a strong commitment to ACHC’s mission of enhancing patient care and safety. They will be a forward-thinking finance professional with exceptional leadership, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Qualifications and attributes desired in ACHC’s Controller include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with active CPA certification.
- Extensive experience in Accounting or Finance, with public accounting experience preferred.
- Significant leadership responsibility managing accounting/financial operations and teams that support multiple accounting functions.
- Experience in accreditation and/or the health care sector is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and regulatory requirements, with experience in a nonprofit environment desired.
- Experience in a Services (i.e., people for hire) organization is desired.
- Advanced Excel skills a must, along with extensive experience using accounting systems (preferably Sage Intacct or comparable).
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a detail-oriented mindset.
- Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams, fostering collaboration and professional development.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to diverse audiences.

This position is office-based at ACHC’s headquarters in the Raleigh-Durham, NC, area with the ability to work 2 days per week remotely. Relocation assistance provided by ACHC if applicable.
