The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Wake County's mission is to provide support, education and advocacy, to individuals, families, and caregivers living with mental health challenges to lead better lives in Wake County.  According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year, that means over 200,000 adults in Wake County have a need for the support, education and advocacy that NAMI Wake County offers.

Having recently completed a strategic plan, the Board of Directors is looking to position the agency for continued success and long-term sustainability through the hiring of an Executive Director.  The organization is governed by a 14-person Board and has an operating budget of $140,000. Income is made up of donations, membership, and events.

The organization is focused on the following four goals:
1) Sustain resources to effectively support the delivery of NAMI Wake County’s mission.
2) Conduct programs to serve Wake County community needs and fulfill the NAMI Wake County mission.
3) Provide easily accessible resources to individuals living with mental illness, their families/caregivers, and community leaders.
4) Leads a collaborative approach that encourages Wake County leaders to prioritize community resources for mental health.

NAMI Wake County is an affiliate of the nationwide network that includes the NAMI North Carolina and the NAMI national office. NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

After 31 years as a volunteer led organization, the Board of Directors now seeks a self-starting, high-energy, relationship builder as its executive director.

NAMI Wake County has many attributes that will benefit its new Executive Director:

A board of directors committed to building a strong future;
An affiliation with the statewide and national network;
A base of volunteers, members and donors who make the programs possible.

The new Executive Director will be called upon to fulfill the following key responsibilities:

Leadership:  Serve as the primary advocate, fundraiser, spokesperson, and administrator.  Responsible for developing a philanthropic spirit and unified sense of purpose among board members, volunteers, donors, and community partners.  The leader will work with the board in refining the vision and strategic plan that charts a course for NAMI Wake County’s future and then articulates that vision to internal and external stakeholders. 

Resource Development: Ensure short and long-term fundraising plans are in place. Cultivate board members, donors, volunteers, and other partners in a way that inspires them to support NAMI Wake County. This includes expanding the breadth and depth of relationships and true collaborative partnerships that will lead to sustainable funding streams and significant philanthropic investments in NAMI Wake County’s future. 

Board Governance:  In collaboration with the Board, identify, recruit, train, and retain board members and volunteers. Maintain regular communications with the board of directors and provide them with the necessary support, counsel and information necessary for effective involvement. Ensure a quality process for supporting the board and their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, program delivery, and increasing overall visibility in the community. 

Program and Financial Oversight:  Ensure quality and relevant programs with a focus on supporting individuals and families struggling with mental health. Oversee the financial integrity of NAMI Wake County through annual budget planning and operating within the approved budget.

Manage Relationships with Collaborative Partners: Engage strategic partners including NAMI North Carolina, NAMI National and other local organizations serving the same population. Identify mutually beneficial partnerships to fulfill NAMI Wake County’s mission. Serve as an advocate on policy issues and champion increased support from elected officials.

Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations:  Work to build a strong identification of the NAMI Wake County brand to ensure the ability to leverage financial, programmatic, and fundraising opportunities available to the organization.  Oversee all communications including the monthly newsletter, annual report, website, email, social media and other general communications.



The new leader must demonstrate a firm commitment to and passion for the NAMI Wake County mission and vision.  In addition, he or she should possess a variety of attributes, including:

  • Leadership that motivates the board, staff, donors, volunteers, and community partners.
  • A collaborative approach toward expanding community partnerships, programs and building strong donor and volunteer relationships.
  • Big picture vision with an ability to attend to the details.
  • Integrity, consistency, and sound judgment in decision-making.   
  • A willingness to listen and respond respectfully to questions and concerns and build consensus among stakeholders.



  • A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college/university in social work, psychology, human services, business or other related fields.
  • Knowledge of the public mental health system.
  • A proven track record in building and maintaining relationships that foster a spirit of collaboration.
  • Demonstrated success in increasing revenues and philanthropic investments of public and private sources. Strong grant writing and project management skills.
  • Five or more years in a non-profit leadership position with demonstrated experiences in organizational management including planning, delegating, innovation and program development.
  • The ability to inspire others through written and verbal communications.
  • Experience with fiscal management, financial oversight, and experience in budgeting.

Salary ($40k-$50k) is commensurate with related experience. Benefits include a $500 per month stipend for the purchase of health care, paid vacations and holidays.
