Easterseals UCP North Carolina & Virginia seeks a strategic and energetic Vice President of Development to execute its comprehensive resource development program in NC and VA.

For 75 years, Easterseals UCP has been a driving force filling gaps and addressing the needs of children and adults with disabilities throughout North Carolina and Virginia.  Working side-by-side with more than 20,000 individuals and their families, Easter Seals UCP provides a broad network of services and support to help persons with disabilities and their families achieve better days. 

Easterseals UCP’s mission is to create opportunities, promote individual choice, and change the lives of children and adults with disabilities by maximizing their individual potential to LIVE, LEARN, WORK, and PLAY.  Guided by a set of core values - Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, and Innovation - the 2,600 staff team provides high quality services including therapy, social and life skills training, employment and residential programs, early intervention services, child development centers, family counseling, crisis support, and job training across 135 service sites in North Carolina and Virginia. As part of its 2020 strategic plan, Easterseals UCP seeks to reach 10,000 North Carolinians living with autism through a diverse network of informed services.  

The Leadership Opportunity

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Development will manage a personal pipeline of individuals, foundations, and corporate donors to hit fundraising expectations while overseeing development operations to maximize and support the work of the development team. This position will manage and direct regional staff and ensure effective preparation and execution of successful special events.  

The Vice President of Development will have the opportunity to advance a strategic plan that will sustain and expand Easterseals UCP’s capacity to help their neighbors in need achieve better days. Easterseals UCP is poised for growth following an internal reorganization, rebrand, and development of a clear vision for program expansion and community engagement.

This is an exciting opportunity to build a development team focused on increasing Easterseals UCP’s annual base of philanthropic support and drive leadership giving, working in concert with the CEO, Board of Directors and development team to execute a dynamic philanthropic giving program. Duties and responsibilities include:

Development Team Operations & Management 

  • Manage a development staff comprised of regional development managers, event staff, and grants manager.
  • Promote a team environment that drives success and accountability.
  • Support the CEO, development committee members, and board members to achieve goals.
  • Develop and manage processes to capture prospect information, donor relationships/contacts and notes in Raiser’s Edge donor database.
  • Produce reports to track progress towards goals and maximizes system utilization with support staff.

Donor Relations

  • Develop strong relationships with individual donors, corporate partners, and foundation donors.
  • Provide disciplined approach to building donor pipeline throughout the organization. Use disciplined moves management strategies to track donor engagement.
  • Utilize strong research and development skills to secure new donors, retain current donors, and support increased giving by those with greater capacity.
  • Manage and direct development staff to execute the annual appeal process through multiple channels including mail and face to face asks.
  • Develop and manage a donor stewardship program that is customized to the donor and his/her philanthropic interests.
  • Facilitate a robust program of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship targeting major gift prospects, involving the CEO and other agency leaders when appropriate.

Special Events

  • Manage event staff and committees in the development of and implementation of planning meetings, receptions and other donor/prospect events.
  • Coordinate pre-event preparation, event logistics, promotional materials, and event follow-up, attending and assisting at events and planning meetings as needed.
  • Work with staff to recruit and coordinate volunteers for events.

Special Projects & Campaigns

  • Assist the CEO on special projects and campaigns to support a vibrant major gifts program.

Attributes of the Ideal Director of Development

The Vice President of Development must be committed to the mission and values of Easterseals UCP and dedicated to stewarding relationships with internal and external constituencies that enable the successful, consistent delivery of the mission.  In addition, he or she should possess key credentials, including:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of experience working across the spectrum of a comprehensive development strategy.
  • Results orientation with proven experience managing development office operations.
  • Motivated, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards and a professional image.
  • Experience increasing leadership giving ($1,000+) and building a major gift ($25,000) pipeline.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage priorities effectively and work well under deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and database management experience with strong user knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Raiser’s Edge.
  • Working well with key volunteers and board members.
  • Working with varied personalities and styles easily.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills with a focus on details.
  • Willingness to offer direct and constructive feedback to development department direct reports and to executive management in professional, respectful manner.
  • Positive, outgoing personality and supportive management style.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Possession of a current, unrestricted, state-appropriate driver’s license and current personal vehicle insurance.
